WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES

Sorry for putting the kicks in your face, but after all the walking, my “dawgs were talking.” Fresh off the Vans Warped Tour 2008, with a little time to reflect. Much love and respect to the “DTR45 Crew” for hitting the road and making it fun, memorable and tolerable. There’s nothing worse than traveling or hanging with a bunch of clowns for an extended amount of time. So I thank the intelligent minds that traveled along.
Thanks Yall! :D J LoPro (Mr. Blame it on me. It’s cool!), A1 (Mr. Where in the world is A1?), Sean Harwell (Mr. I Can Sell an iPod to Steve Jobs) and T1X (Mr. Passing in the Right Lane is Illegal).

Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis were incredibly “HOT.” I’m not using “hot” as a slang word for “great time, dope, fun or exciting…I’m talking 95 degrees with humidity Hot! But to be clear, despite the heat, we met good people and had great time!

The days went pretty much like this:
Check-in time: 10am or earlier to find out what time our performance was going to be.
Sharpies: We wrote what the performance time on small flyers and canvased the parks hitting anyone who “looked” like they knew what hip-hop was
Hustle: Pushed Cd’s and tees all day and networked
Show: Performed. Do the daayumm thang!!
Post-Show: Mo’ and Mo’ Hustling. Sean was top seller by far. Killin’ em!

A mighty Thank You again to all of the locals who came out to show support at the Darien Lake show. Congrats to Drew and Mike (contest winners) for not only “knowing their hip hop” but for being able to take a day off work and hopefully found some time to enjoy the festivities.

Lastly, Peace to the Entire Skull Candy crew, Add.verse, Othello, Dante, Pirate Signal, Joel, Two Mics and a Kick, Twilight Sentinels, DJ TopSpeed for the heavy rotation, Geoff with GFist (great hook-up homie), and ummm a whole lot of others. Oh yeah, Kyle and Kurt…Hope to talk with you guys soon.

LETA LIKES IT

The I LIKE IT tees are still hittin’ em and becoming more appropriate and stylish as the summer heats up. Leta, a young lady from Toronto who bought a shirt at the Levack Block show earlier this year, put her creative hands to work and scissored the I LIKE IT shirt to a sexy, unique design all her own. The back is cut out and only held together by thinly cut strips of the shirt itself. GO LETA!! GO LETA!!
For the ladies worried about a shirt no fitting them correctly, talk to Leta and maybe she can hook you up
And for the suspect fellas who want a shirt like the one above…”DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!”

THE ZIG ZAG ZIG

Temporarily back in the “Z” or Zaragosa and definitely in the right element…the “studio.”
We met a really good guy named Menik while on tour who was a friend of the promoter. He was a rapper, producer and DJ along with a couple of other hats like airport baggage handler, handyman, engineer, and entrepreneur. It was a gorgeous day out on our way to Barcelona, but before we headed out, he decided to take us to see his studio that he pretty much built by himself. He had some of the most creative studio solutions I’d ever scene. It was completely decked out with leather sofas, gorgeous wood floors, cutting edge technology, and there was a story behind every little thing in the studio. The doors of the studio both the control console and the recording booth were custom, with the old school style “industrial” freezer closure handles. These doors were as thick as submarine capsule doors.

Apparently Menik was a young yet very accomplished individual. He gave me a Cd of beats to check out which I still haven’t had the chance to check out yet and he gave Tone a “Beat Break” vinyl that he created himself. I was very impressed with this dudes work ethic and knowledge of music, especially American music. OOhh!!! He also runs his own record label as well, and his artist is pretty dope too!

Hip Hop is MASSIVE!!! Cheers to Graff Writers Worldwide.

BUENAS NOCHES

Here is the last picture I took on the way out of the club of a refrigerator filled with Red Bull beverages.
Don’t really have an explanation or a story behind this, but it caught my eye as I was walking out. I actually could’ve used a Red Bull considering the long day we had and the long road still ahead. As I’m thinking now, it’s interesting that Red Bull is still simply Red Bull, instead of El Toro de Rojo or something. I guess thats the importance of branding, sticking to the name regardless of the place, time, person, currency etc.

Cheers to all the Toros in the world born between Apr. 20 – May 20th.

MIDNIGHT IN MADRID

The club was so smoky that I was quite anti-social that night with the other acts, as I HAD to stand outside because it was just to suffocating inside. My eyes were burning, my voice was going hoarse and I hadn’t even hit the stage yet. (The banner above is a pic of me on stage that night in Madrid.)
Anyways, I chilled outside for a while and caught some great pics of Madrid past Midnight. Some dudes were across the street with a boom box…yes a “Boom Box” in a circle freestyling some rhymes. I took a pic but it didn’t come out well at all..sorry! It was mad cool to see cats on the corner rhyming on some 1988 stuff, just chilling and kicking it.

The streets were pretty empty after Midnight as you can see above. But the sky was clear and the breeze was perfect, the streets were peaceful. It felt good being a stranger in a new place with no drama. Very serene.

I had to get my “B-Boy Worldwide” picture. Cheers to Hip-Hop as I remember it in its best years.
No worries though…Billy Drease is on the scene now.

I LEFT MY STICKER IN EL SEGUNDO

Well I didn’t “Leave my wallet” in El Segundo like Q-Tip…although I think if I did, someone in Spain would have mailed it back to the states, since nothing was in it except American money. They would’ve said..”Don’t leave your trashy, worthless money over here you idiot. BEAT IT!!”

So, no lost wallets stories…BUT i did leave some stickers!! Tone plastered the stickers quietly through out the small area near the club, dipping in and out of the shadows with stickers mysteriously appearing on college signs, poles, benches, doors etc. “Way to go Tone!!” It was all Tone. Yep. Tone. (just in case La Policia wants to transport us back to Spain..) LoL!

MADRIDe (the ride)

After the show in Zaragosa with the Masked Machete Man, we gassed up and headed BACK to Madrid, where we first crowned myself as the “Heavy-Wait Champ.

The promoter of course accommodated everything, so I have no idea how much gas was in regards to the gas/oil problem in the states, but if you squint your eyes you may be able to read the numbers on the pump. Maybe!

Either way, it was a beautiful day to travel. Lots of road to cover, for as I mentioned before its about 4 hours in between Zaragosa and Madrid. This time we were in the care and hands of the promoter and not the anonymous speed limit obeying bus driver from the night before. We were riding in much more comfortable transpo this time and burning up the road, or “la calle,” pronounced Kah-Ye which means street, which I am not sure if there is a spanish word for road. We were surely not on a street, we were on a LONG road! There were a few stops here and there for gas, no food joints though, just open land, mountains and the sun. I couldn’t stop thinking about how terrible it would be to run out of gas along this journey, for the stops were cities apart. Thank goodness.

The video footage below is grainy and low and mad bright as it was sunny as heck. Check it out.

I took this picture because I thought the trash receptacle was dope, as opposed to the “BLAGH” grey colored ones in the states. GET SOME COLOR in your life, Americans!!! geeeesh!!….AND some design.

MO’ DESIGN in MADRID

(Above: Luggage carousel)

If I may say so myself, I’m quite a “dope” photographer…BUT…my camera is quite “domestic”…so I guess I’m a “Dopestic” photographer. Either way, the shot above displays more of the design of the Madrid airport, which is huge by the way. This is where we had to wait for our luggage to go “round n round.”

Another shot, showing the colorfulness of the airport. If you look close, and go left off into the distance of the picture, you’ll see the pillars (yellow) slowly going through the color wheel and ending in a deep purple. In the other direction, which I did not capture, the pillars turn from yellow into a deep red, going through all the warm colors in between.

Design is everything!

FRIENDS…

PHOTOGRAPHER

This morning as I was listening to the Tom Joyner Morning Show, I heard Tavis Smiley drop this gem, “You are capable of doing all things, but you can’t do everything.” We ARE capable of doing all things, but we CAN’T do everything, by OURSELVES that is. So with the help of some friends, we recently pulled off a pretty successful photo shoot at a very visible, yet untapped location right here in Buffalo. Here’s how it went down: Trev Thorne, (my friend) figured it was time for new photos. So through Maisha (Trev’s wife), Rich B. (maisha’s friend) was recommended as the photographer for the engagement. After discussions on the setting/locations, we kinda’ came up dry and I wasn’t that excited about shooting in the typical locations. So, Tom (my other friend) suggested a really cool site off the beaten path, but still in plain sight oddly enough.

Long story made short…Rich, Trev and I met at the secret location and right away, we were all incredibly impressed with the atmosphere and setting of the location that we didn’t need to go any other place. Rich has a great eye and command of the given space and his equipment. REAL dope!
Check out his work! Thanks Trev, Rich, Maisha and Tom!
peace

ps…here’s a throwback…dedicated to my friends!!! Peep the beginning!!!

BE BOLD IN GOLD

I keep it really positive when I write and post my thoughts and this post is no different. Although, I’m trying to figure out what this is all about and who’s idea was it to take the alleged “Prince of Golden Showers” and actually dress him in all gold. If I didn’t know better, I would swear he casting for a part in the 2008 version of the WIZ. Which reminds me..shouts out to Mark at OtherWisz for posting the “Ease on the Down the Road” video on his blog.

Well, maybe he’s LITERALLY” painting himself a new image as being a “golden boy.” We all have somethings that we’d like to put behind us, but unfortunately, while to trying to move forward from his past, I think that he will wish he could put THIS behind him too.
