GOOD PEOPLE GOOD TIMES

(Above: My mom in the middle with her “homegirl crew” aka “My Aunties”) by Kenny Macdonald

I wish I knew who to credit for the photographs, because the picture above had me in tears, just seeing the joy in my mothers face in watching her son perform really hit me in the heart. Thanks Mom!

There were many beautiful and wonderful people that I intended to thank and would have liked to acknowledge during the WBFO performance, but while on stage, it was “strictly” business since the show was airing LIVE on the radio.

I didn’t get the chance to thank my sweet, brilliant wife and wonderful children, or my dad, in-laws, cousins etc. My mom did get a shout from the announcer, Bert Gambini and my sister was on stage with me, along with my cousin Mike. But there were some really GREAT people in the audience like City Honors Alumni, two of which were pregnant…so that was pretty cool…”Thanks girls!!” Lots of highschool friends that really touched my heart to see them in attendance. Waaaay too many people to thank, but please know that you ARE ALL appreciated!!!

One more round of applause for the DOPE 45′s. The people in the picture above are unmatched and I’m delighted that they’ve all agreed to work with a brotha’. They are definitely DOPE!!

Above, I had to pull my man Trev Thorne on stage to perform one of the many “classics” songs we made as a part of the group called Raw Intel. Thanks Bro!

Thanks to Monica for her energy during our performance of “Superman Swag.” Lastly, Thanks to my stylist “LeeStew” Alleta Steward who hooked up the DOPE45′s and myself for this show. Check her out at: http://appleshaberdashery.com

LIVE AT WBFO

At the request of some friends, one of whom had a birthday on the day of the WBFO show, May 28, I am finally able to bring the journey from Spain, back home to the states, primarily Buffalo!

On May 28, I had the PLEASURE of being the first Hip Hop artist to perform on the stage Live at Allen Hall (UB South Campus) as a part of WBFO’s long running Wednesday Night concert series. I can’t thank the people at WBFO enough for the opportunity, professionalism, and hospitality. Alison, Bert, Ken, the stage hands, the volunteers, the sound man (by the way it sounded awesome on-air), Brenda and many many others. My apologies for not remembering everyone’s name.

I know its a couple weeks later, and many of you may have listened to the podcast already, but click the play button above to hear it again or to hear it for the first time, whichever applies.

KEEP FEEDIN’ YOU AND FEEDIN’ YOU AND…

(Above: Delicious home made oatmeal. I haven’t learned how to make fruit yet)

You see I had to do my little MTV “blur” thingy on the syrup. No FREE product placements..$$ Ch-Ching!!

BREAKFAST! Definitely my favorite meal of all. I love good food as much as I love good music. I guess I just love good stuff, period. I love good people too. Good places to shop, good movies and good restaurants. But the one thing I don’t think so good, is when I see this on the menu of diners/restaurants: (Breakfast served until 11am). OUCH!!

I need to be able to eat breakfast at ALL times of the day. What’s wrong with these places? It’s easier to whip up a short stack faster than it is to thaw, season and grill some meat…AINT IT?? (pardon the incorrect grammar..but ain’t it better than cursing)

Where are all the people that LOVE breakfast? The ones who can eat pancakes at 1 am in the morning just because they have the taste for some good ol’ eggs, milk, batter, cinnamon and vanilla.

Cheers to all the good people who love a good breakfast…

Oh one last thing…When I was in Atlanta for Trev and Maisha’s wedding some years ago, his brother Tommy and I went to the Waffle House. I’m crazy excited about having some good old southern styled breakfast, and I ask the young lady for a “TALL stack of pancakes”…she replies..”Dis is the Waffle House!…” So I’m like, OK…can I have a SHORT stack of pancakes then?
She says…”I SAID this is the WAFFLE HOUSE.”
Me and my “HUNGRY” Northern-self, firmly replies… “OK! What KIND of pancakes do you have then??”

She says slowly (southern accent included)…”THIS….IS…the ….WAFFLE….house!”…..
Humbly I say….”hmm..ok…sorry. what kind of WAFFLES do you have then”…..LOL
darn yankee

A recent performance in Buffalo as a part of “The Truth is Here” Brother Ali tour. Much respect to my man DJ Lo Pro “the sound provider” on the 1′s and 2′s. We’ll be puttin’ down again in May at the University of Buffalo, so stay on the look for the advertising/promotion for “Live in Allen Hall.”

ARTIST RULE THE WORLD

(Above: A collaborative drawing painting my friend Kobe Barber and I worked on together. He painted and added color to the pen and ink skeleton which is still visible.)

Below is a response to my post about Buffalo being ranked #1 among mid-sized cities for arts and culture, which I’m still trying to understand myself.

“I have found most Buffalo artists to be #1 in creativity, dedication, perseverance, and courage……
I love what i do so much that i’d do it for nothing…..and sometimes i have to do it for nothing….if buffalo is #1, it must be because we artists are #1…..i wonder when this city will come to believe, as we do, that ART is central to LIFE……I wonder when us #1 artist-folks will be financially rewarded for working so hard and for making Buffalo #1 for arts and culture among mid-size cities……”
– Karima Amin

I had to take this quote from one of the most talented and gifted “heros or SHE-ros” I know. Karima Amin is a wonderful person first and foremost, but also an activist, an encyclopedia, an actor, a singer, writer, storyteller….and the list goes on. Oh, and she can beat the heck out of a drum and rap at the same time. She has dedicated so much of herself and her talents to Buffalo and the surrounding areas for so long, that she has all the right to say what she wishes about the state of Buffalo.

I don’t have enough time to convey all my feelings about the importance of art, but the short version would go like this.
*Are you sitting in a chair right now?
*Are you clicking a mouse, whether wireless or wired?
*Are you reading this from an iPod, Blackberry or monitor?
*Are you resting your elbow on a desk staring at each letter I’ve typed on your monitor?
*Are you dressed right now?

From the clothes you have on, the sneakers, the undies, your technology gadgets, the desk you are sitting at, the chair you are sitting on, the car you drive….

You can thank us ARTISTS for making that possible, for everything starts on paper as a sketch/layout/drawing before manufacturing happens. GIVE PROPS TO AN ARTIST TODAY!!

Peace

IN YURRR FAAAYSE!!!

READ

This just in…”Buffalo is #1 for arts and culture of mid-sized cities.” Interesting how a place so severly crippled by the cuts to arts programs, still ranks number one among medium sized cities. One would be lead to believe that the city is stirring with culture and thriving with budding and well recognized/appreciated artists. Hmmm! For those of you that live in Buffalo, PLEASE put a brother down with the special 3-D glasses, because I must be missing all the good parts of the movie.

In 2005, the city was badly wounded by a deep budget cut, where the first thing to bleed out were the art programs and cultural societies, which still haven’t fully recovered. I was once the Assistant for Community programs for one of the most recognized Art galleries in the world, right here in Buffalo, and I painfully watched 20% of the staff get walked out in one day due to the cuts. I also witnessed an entire community of well-deserving children and parents, already economically and emotionally strained, become abandoned overnight by the withdraw of the support of the FREE art programs afforded them.

Since that time, there have been a couple of improvements, but why is it, that as a Buffalo resident, I still find it hard to experience the joy and jubilation of the arts that its been recently recognized for?

I WILL say this, the Buffalo Society of Artists surely opened my eyes to some really hardcore, dedicated and talented individuals, whom refuse to let the “arts flower” wither, whether in the cold of winter or the heat of summer, the cultural rose will stand strong and the torch will remain lit. There are armies of artists, art administrators and institutions that are doing ALL that they can do to make keep this city #1 among mid-sized cities in the arts, with very little money, and we must all support and applaud their efforts, because it is them alone that fight the good fight for what remains.

CLASSIC I

loose-ends.png
THIS ONES FOR YOU MOMMY!!! Love you.

Classic! Whatever happened to classic music? Whatever happened to the music that takes you back to a particular place and time, normally a good time, preferably a great time? The kind of music that you could dance around the house to with your mom and not feel embarassed one bit. The cleaning your house and doing chores on Saturday music.
I’ve just been informed that they dont make those anymore. How unfortunate for the youth today, that will probably only have a Mary J. Blige album to look back upon, or a John Legend, or maybe a Kanye, or maybe an Edreys..ha!

Back in the days, 80′s and 90′s, there were tons of musicians crafting memorable gems for us to go back and unearth one day. Well, today is that day, thanks to DreHow at Media Music Group, he’s got me started on this thing where I HAVE to post my classic, most inspirational music here.
Classic 1…
Group: LOOSE ENDS
Time: 1990
Place: Roller rink with my mom and her sisters..GETTIN IT IN on the floor…
Lyric:
You’ve got to tell yourself
Try and you will progress
There’s more to life than you know
Don’t give up the fight
Take one day at a time
You just got to have hope

Just got word about this cat and just checked out his video and I am highly impressed on what he’s bringing to the table

The name is Edreys (pronounced E-drees) is hailing from Buffalo, New York His style is similar to that of Common, Lupe, Kanye and Nas. From the recent press release he’s got a lot going from him: going on this years Warped Tour, performing on Jimmy Kimmel, another video and more.

The thing that really stood out after getting notice of this cat is that he’s more than ‘just’ an emcee. He handles his business as seen on his own blog which shows he does some painting as well (and pretty fly if I do say so myself).

Again, don’t JUST take my word for it – peep the video below. Low budget does not mean it has to be done in the hood, so please take notes and look for this cat when he rolls through. Make sure you hit up his myspace as well:
