GOOD HAIR

The age-old saying “I got, she got, he got (has) GOOD HAIR!”…FINALLY, something to really talk about.
As only a few comedians can ever do, Chris Rock sheds a comedic yet serious light onto how and why African-Americans (mostly woman) choose to perm, relax and put weave into their hair. Personally, I’m a “Love what you have sort of guy.” But who am I to get in the way of ones wallet and their contribution to false hair and a $9 billion dollar industry. GOOD HAIR

CITY KIDS

city-hall-visit

Sometimes I have to NOT be so Billy D’d!! Recently as DADDY, I helped chaperoned maybe 15 or so kids ranging 4-6 years of age from my sons school. We walked what felt like a marathon due to the short, stubby legs of the children and their wondering eyes and stimulated minds, dragging out what was only about 2 miles. It was a gorgeous day for a walk and WOW did we EVER HAVE FUN!! I love kids.

One of the things I remember most was when out of the blue, one of the students who had been pretty quite along the walk just shouted out, “Mr. Emeka’s Dad…do you know how to spell Captain?”…I spelled it for her and she went about her silence again.

mayor-brownIt was a GREAT surprise for the kids to run into Mayor Brown. Our timing was lucky to run into our Mayor and he took the time to speak with the kids and answer their random and funny questions.

what are YOU teaching YOUR kids!??

I must say, this encourages me to explore introducing even MORE things to my children. When they catch things at a very young age, it truly ignites their brilliance. Here are a few BRILLIANT kids to say the least.

Also, this young kid has the fastest hands EVER!! 2008 Cup Stacking Champ. There is no video enhancing on this. The Brilliance of Steven Purugganan.

HOMECOMING: LIVE SHOW SUNDAY

live-nov16

I’m coming home to give it to you LIVE!! See me this Sunday at Broadway Joe’s Bar and Grill at 3051 Main Street, Buffalo, NY. Also my good friends Al Maxx aka Banks, Atherton (Canada), Paulie Rhyme (Cali) and Prince Po (Organized Konfusion).

YEAH!

MISUNDERSTOOD

You HAVE to check out this video. It’s clean, safe, non-offensive, yet funny as heck! It also leads into my story below.

My good friend Tom aka Mr. T aka Poppi gave me a cd a couple of weeks with good recommendation. The cd turned out to be 14 songs of some of the most incredible music I’ve heard in years. Tom’s nephew, all of maybe 18 years old, wrote, sang and played every instrument on the cd. Again, let me tell you, it is just one of the most incredible bodies of work I’ve ever heard. His voice is signature, rhythms are catchy and grooving, and it leaves you with such a good feeling.

Anyways, there is this one song that I really love, where he sings this one line “I don’t want obsession..any more than you dooooo…(repeated). He’s like kickin’ about this girl and how he wants to take her out and how pricey gas is, and how he would buy her a necklace and a well deserving dress if he could afford to etc. The entire time I’m singing it loudly in the car, just loving the track. So yesterday Continue reading

GOOD PEOPLE GOOD TIMES

(Above: My mom in the middle with her “homegirl crew” aka “My Aunties”) by Kenny Macdonald

I wish I knew who to credit for the photographs, because the picture above had me in tears, just seeing the joy in my mothers face in watching her son perform really hit me in the heart. Thanks Mom!

There were many beautiful and wonderful people that I intended to thank and would have liked to acknowledge during the WBFO performance, but while on stage, it was “strictly” business since the show was airing LIVE on the radio.

I didn’t get the chance to thank my sweet, brilliant wife and wonderful children, or my dad, in-laws, cousins etc. My mom did get a shout from the announcer, Bert Gambini and my sister was on stage with me, along with my cousin Mike. But there were some really GREAT people in the audience like City Honors Alumni, two of which were pregnant…so that was pretty cool…”Thanks girls!!” Lots of highschool friends that really touched my heart to see them in attendance. Waaaay too many people to thank, but please know that you ARE ALL appreciated!!!

One more round of applause for the DOPE 45′s. The people in the picture above are unmatched and I’m delighted that they’ve all agreed to work with a brotha’. They are definitely DOPE!!

Above, I had to pull my man Trev Thorne on stage to perform one of the many “classics” songs we made as a part of the group called Raw Intel. Thanks Bro!

Thanks to Monica for her energy during our performance of “Superman Swag.” Lastly, Thanks to my stylist “LeeStew” Alleta Steward who hooked up the DOPE45′s and myself for this show. Check her out at: http://appleshaberdashery.com

THE ZIG ZAG ZIG

Temporarily back in the “Z” or Zaragosa and definitely in the right element…the “studio.”
We met a really good guy named Menik while on tour who was a friend of the promoter. He was a rapper, producer and DJ along with a couple of other hats like airport baggage handler, handyman, engineer, and entrepreneur. It was a gorgeous day out on our way to Barcelona, but before we headed out, he decided to take us to see his studio that he pretty much built by himself. He had some of the most creative studio solutions I’d ever scene. It was completely decked out with leather sofas, gorgeous wood floors, cutting edge technology, and there was a story behind every little thing in the studio. The doors of the studio both the control console and the recording booth were custom, with the old school style “industrial” freezer closure handles. These doors were as thick as submarine capsule doors.

Apparently Menik was a young yet very accomplished individual. He gave me a Cd of beats to check out which I still haven’t had the chance to check out yet and he gave Tone a “Beat Break” vinyl that he created himself. I was very impressed with this dudes work ethic and knowledge of music, especially American music. OOhh!!! He also runs his own record label as well, and his artist is pretty dope too!

AUTHENTIC MEXICAN

While in San Fran, I noticed something that made me chuckle. If there was a mexican restaurant with a mexican name, you’d better believe that the employees were of that decent. While here in Buffalo, ummmm….that MAY not be the case a majority of the time.
We actually just ate at a place in downtown Buffalo, where the cuisine was Mexican, but the people behind the counter didn’t look like they spoke one-lick of a foreign language.

(picture of the toilet at EL BALAZO)

I posted already about how good the burrito was that I ate in SF, but I didn’t talk about how UN-mexican the restaurants in Buffalo are. BUT, if you close your eyes while you eat your burrito, and throw a hot-air fan behind your neck, you might be able to imagine you were south of the border or out west..getting the real deal…but good look trying to find someone with that sweet accent.

LIGHT BRIGHT

levack-b-dancefloor.png

In Toronto there is a nice little soh0-like dining/bar called Levack Brock which was the third city stop for the “Green Giants” Tour with Dante, Atherton, Paulie Rhyme and myself. The place was like the brick and mortar manifestation of a mullet hairstyle, “Business in the front…Party in the back!”

The front portion was decked out with dark wood features on the bar, the floor, the tables and chairs, nice and simple lighting treatments, large wide glass windows facing the street with a great menu and hospitable pretty waitresses.  But through the back passage, it was party and concert time. I’ll post the pics of the performances at another time, but the pics below are of the neon lights in the back room that I found to be so cool.
