ARTLANTA

LISTEN<a
As was mentioned in an earlier post, I met some good people while down in Atlanta, most of which were artists for the most part in some form or another. The brother above, Omar, I met at Trev’s apartment back in 1997 or so, and he was a ripe emcee looking for his voice. I loved the way dude could put his sentences and words together real clever-like, and the one thing I admired most and couldn’t overlook was how much he reminded me of Q-Tip from ATCQ. Dude was just dope. Well from what I understand, he’ll always be an emcee at heart, but since the last time we’ve seen each other, he has moved into the art of mastering technology, film/video and photography and much more. The other day I got an email from him regarding a podcast he has with a bro named Chris. Check it out if you need some background music while working. Lotta throwback, good ol’ wholesome classic hip hop and soul. LISTEN<a

Next, another brother from ArtLanta, Goldi. I remember meeting this cat and finding it hard to believe that his real name was Golden. Well, with the artistic ability he has, all that he touches becomes just that, Golden. He probably won’t remember this, but once again…the scene for most of my Atlanta memories (Trev’s apartment), Golden once left behind a small sketch book on the kitchen counter. Now as an artist myself, I’m not very comfortable with people thumbing through my work, with or without me around, but he left the book wide open. It caught my eye, and the image that I saw sketched in pencil is STILL in my mind. It was incredible and wasn’t even completed. By the way, Goldi if you are reading this…I didn’t..DIDN’T thumb through your book.
LoL…respect!!….but seriously…I really didn’t look. I just closed it and put it in my luggage right before I flew back to Buffalo…LOL!!! Peace

WHATCHU KNOW ABOUT THAT!?

Inspired by the memories of me visiting my friend Trev in Atlanta back in 1997 – 1998 and meeting some pretty cool people while I was there like Maisha, Allison, Goldi, Jahah and Omar to name a few, I had to do something really special and meaningful. I became driven to find some of the old cassette tapes that Trev and I used to mail back and forth to each other.

Yes, “mail” as in the post office, boxed and sealed with a stamp MAIL! Thank goodness for email…but actually when I think about, physically mailing the tapes was cheaper than what it costs to have an Internet Service Provider. Hmmm!
Anyways, these tapes are classics, collectibles as valuable as vinyl in my opinion. BUT!!…once again blessed and foiled by the advancement of technology…”Where the heck can I find a tape cassette player!?”

In order to find these tapes, which are only like..2/30 or more tapes of beats and old songs and freestyles, I had to to crawl into this tight cubbyhole over bins, bagged clothes, computer keyboards and monitors to retrieve the box. So after collapsing into a couple of boxes while trying to slowly back out of the cubbyhole, there was no way that I was going to go through all that without posting what I recovered from the hunt.

DEFINITELY AMAZING

Check out the new “iChair.” It’s a wireless, invisible stool that you can place and sit down on anywhere and makes you look like you are suspened in air. Only draw-back…”If you move your feet…you literally LOSE your seat!!!…gotta keep your bootie and your eye on this one.

INTERVIEW is also below, (for those of you who don’t like clicking)

DEFINITELY AMAZING: First of all let me say that it is an honor to have an artist with talents such as yours on Definitely Amazing. I listened to the music in depth and realized how powerful you are as an lyricist, so that brings me to my first question.

DA: When Edreys sits with pen and pad what is your thought process when creating such powerful lyrics?

EDREYS: Let me explain first, that my name defines who I am and what I do. Edreys is an arabic based name which translates to, “one who writes; one who masters the pen.” With that said, writing is almost a meditation, it’s not that difficult of a process. As I say in one of my songs, “One ear’s for the music and the other’s for God, so when I listen at the same time it turns into songs..” That’s what I do, I listen to the music, the beat and I tune into a frequency of creativity and let my hands write the thoughts. I think I’m one of the greatest at engaging the write words with the right music to make a beautiful marriage. Its like painting a picture with words and I aim at making each song my best song, my best painting so to speak.

DA: On a joint such as “Free” does your personal opinion give life to a song like this, or is it just how the people are feeling about a certain subject?

ED: All of my music starts with me. What I’m able to do though is say, “this is how I feel,” and at the same time be able to consider and reflect on the conditions and thoughts of the people as well. That allows me to get a message across in a more tactful way that’s not preachy. I always focus on the facts, you can’t go wrong with addressing things that have weight and can be proven with fact…otherwise…at the end of the day it is just an opinion, and you know what they say about those.

DA: The video for “I like It” is real dope, how did that song come about
and how did you put together such a dope relative video?

ED: Once again, lets take it back to the process. I made the beat
first and chilled on it for a couple days. When I sat down with it, I
was listening and envisioning… What is this music saying? There was
no real concept to it at the time besides just making something real
strong and fresh, so the lyrics were just a reflection of my roots, my
emceeing side, boasting how nice I am. All I wanted people to do was
respect the fact that out the gate, I can’t be slept on. As I said at
the end of verse 1: “…I do what I like I’m the man around here/ How
much you really like it is all I wanna hear.” The video was purely magical. A brother named Hezues R, with Eye On It productions came up with the concept along with DreHow from Media Music Inc (NYC). Hezues heard some songs of my tracks and picked that song himself,
which we (label/management) had no intention on running with. Once we heard the pitch for the treatment, the location etc…we put it in motion and the rest was magical. Truly! The way it all worked together, from the memorable young lady Eliza, to the boutique, the graffiti walls, the kids, the colors etc. All that in one day of shooting was incredible. I LIKE IT! You can’t say it without making a pun.

DA: Your a man of multiple talents, so what are some of the other things
besides music that people can look foward to this yr?

ED: I’m a poet, an emcee, a writer, a visual artist, an educator and an entrepreneur. Anything that falls in line with those, you’ll see me there. I’m working on a book of my writings, traveling art exhibits, working on a teen mentoring program to name a few. Also, I’m coordinating a historic event at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in September, celebrating the hip hop culture and fine art. I got plans bro!

DA: What music that’s out now that makes you say yeah that is definitely amazing?

ED: Selfishly, my own. Not because it’s mine, but because it truly is
amazing. Outside of that: Chrisette Michele is fire. James Brown is
eternally amazing, so I have to include him. John Legend. Will I Am is
killin’ it. DJ Spinna is crazy. Ryan Leslie is amazing for sure. I’m
still waiting to hear some new D’Angelo…that cat is an inspiration
too. I’m sorry man, there aren’t many things currently that makes me
do or feel much of anything, that’s why I still play my old stuff. “I’m a Jungle Brotha’, straight out the jungle (echo)..” You are what you eat…and all I eat is classics!

Well, back to some images that I took while in San Fran.
Each day, I would just get out and hit the streets and seek anything musically or artistically interesting. I didn’t do any shopping. I think it’s very silly to travel to a place, any place, and be impulsed to buy something because in your mind you think you are getting something extra-special and new because you aren’t shopping in your hometown. FOOL! You know that most likely, the same jeans you buy from the Gap in San Fran, are the same ones you’ll find on sale weeks later when you get back home and go shopping. So, no shopping!!

Since I was roaming alone, well, if you want to get technical, my phone was on roam too…but, since I was solo, I had to make my travels cool and interesting, so I was doing this thing called PIC and GO! There is a “pick and go” term and actual play that is used in basketball, but PIC and GO was something a little different. I love taking pictures, and getting a good composition in the view finder (frame), but to have some fun, I would just pull out the camera, while walking, never losing a step, stick out my arm, point the camera in the general direction of my subject and then “CLICK.” PIC and GO!

They have a bus transportation in San Fran called the MUNI..and of course in typical out of towner fashion, I asked the ticket counter agent..”Can I catch the MUNNY (money) to the Haight/Ashbury area?”

“Sure idiot! You can catch the MUNI (Mm-You-Knee)…Now GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!!!”

my advice for the day…
“keep some good people around you and good things may find their way into your life.”

GO SHOPPING

store.png

I’ve heard it said that “shopping can become and addiction.”
Here are a couple suggestions for you fabric fiends out there:
1) Try scraping the ice from your car windshield in 7 degree weather in ONLY your undergarments (undies, bra, tee, socks, etc.).
Desired result: You will realize that you dont need something NEW…you just need something ON!
Negative result: You may be SO addicted to shopping that you will sit your bare bottom, and house shoe covered feet into the 5 degree Farenheit car with freezing leather seats and proceed to the nearest Macy’s, TJ Maxx or Marshall’s to pick up a new wardrobe.
2) Take a look at some homeless person that you tend to see as ‘less fortunate” and recognize their contentment. They arent worried about how they look to anyone. We tend to call them crazy when we see them talking to themselves and laughing and smiling, meanwhile the joke may actually be on US and we are the source of their daily humor and comedy relief!

SPITTING IMAGE

edreys-vs-edreys.png

Have you looked at yourself today? Have you told yourself how special you are?

We are taught throughout our childhood to fear, praise, admire and learn about everything outside of ourselves, and discover as an adult that we don’t know anything about ourselves. We know who Santa and his reindeer are. We know that Bunny’s lay eggs of various colors. (Sorry if I ruined your dreams there) Whether 20, 30, 40 or 50 years old, you have lived with yourself and actually know very little about who you are. What do you like to do? What do you love to do? What gifts were bestowed upon you at birth? What is it that you do better than anyone else? What brings you happiness? It’s truly shameful and painful to realize that you have been living and existing by the standards of those around you, whether they be family, friends or strangers. Imagine living in a home for 30 years or so, and every time you blow a circuit/fuse, you have to hire someone to walk and simply turn your circuit breaker back to ON, when THAT you can do yourself. That’s how I feel about those of us who live in our bodies for however many years and can’t tell you what makes them tick, what they love, what they’re good at or where their internal circuit breakers are so to speak.

I encourage you all to have a talk with yourself today. Look in the mirror and check out the person whom you never really got a chance to know. Other people see you, but you have been turning a blind eye to yourself, and that self needs some attention. More than just wiping your face with a cloth in the morning. Look into your eyes and start off by saying “Hello or What’s Up (name) …It’s a pleasure to meet you!” When you say that, you will see what other people see when they meet you, as the wonderful and special person you are.

Begin to learn about YOU!

Love

Edreys

I LIVE NEW YORK 2

edreys-and-silda.png

After the I LIVE NY Summit, I had the chance to meet the wonderful Mrs. Silda Spitzer.
She’s awesome.
Yes, I DO own suits. Always have, unlike many rappers/emcees today who decided to finally grow up and with a suit, tie and collar on their shirt.

I truly believe that Raw Intel (former rap group with my man Trev Thorne) was the first to rock the mic in all black suits..tie included.
