DAY 140 GRAMMY CHASE: JUST DOIN IT – MAKING THE VIDEO

Nothing much to explain, just watch the video and look for the premier very shortly. GMA – Good Morning Amy set to debut June 22, 2010.

DAY 139 GRAMMY CHASE: LINER NOTES?

Ok! Grammy Awards for Liner Notes? …As I’ve mentioned time and time again, there are 110 ways to get a Grammy and I just found another one!
What I’ve found is the liner notes that are related to compilations and large collective bodies of works, usually in the form of a chronological timeline and biography are the ones that are typically nominated and awarded. Nevertheless, there are some Grammy holders out there that aren’t necessarily music producers or singers.

1991Best Album Notes – James Brown – Star Time Collection. Also props to the specific writers, namely Nelson George.

DAY 138 GRAMMY CHASE: JODECI

How is it that one of the greatest hip hop/r&b groups and more precisely, the FIRST group to successfully usher in and blend the two styles together, was never awarded a Grammy, or even a Grammy nomination. Unless someone has other information, I have only found that Jodeci was awarded American Music Awards, but not a Grammy. My man Dre would claim that outside of obvious groups like Jackson 5, Beatles, Temptation, Ohio Players, Earth Wind Fire etc and the likes, that Jodeci deserves a high place in the history of music as one of the most influential groups ever and i would agree.

Gotta give it up to Puff for his vision with these cats and Puff is STILL swaggin’ em to def!!!

DAY 137 GRAMMY CHASE: SUBJECT

Our subject is Dwele from the “D.” I remember the first time I heard of this cat, I was really late, but it was still before “Tainted” came out with Slum Village. It was before his album had even dropped, “Subject,” but he had already splashed some waves on the scene before really emerging. Dwele, you may recognize as of late as the smooth piano playing guy on the McDonalds commercials with the mocha coffee drink. He is a multi-talented musician playing everything from the piano, to trumpet, to bass, to guitar. His journey began at the age of 6 and earlier, when he first began honing his craft and love of music, but from the outside it appears that his success was overnight, knowing that it’s quite the opposite.

To get to the point, the Grammy Chase, Dwele released some SERIOUS music on his albums, which he surely should have been recognized for at the highest level, but it wasn’t until collaborations such as Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” and Common’s Grammy-nominated single “The People” that Dwele started to be mention in the same sentence as Grammy. Lo and behond, when he put his own spin on Earth, Wind and Fire’s classic hit “That’s the Way of the World,” from Interpretations: Celebrating the Music of Earth, Wind & Fire,” released on Stax, Dwele found himself as a nominee for Best R&B Alterative/Urban Performance in 2008.

His version is here.

If you need to hear the original, here.

DAY 136 GRAMMY CHASE: JUST DO IN IT

Starting shooting the video today for “Just Doin’ It” with Starlite Productions x MIGZ x DTR. There were various people in attendance for cameos, talent and support. We all had a wonderful time despite the lengthy day, which is always expected for a video worth shooting. (13 hours roughly). I am especially thankful for the people that blessed the video with their talents, so in particular order: Luke Flyywalker, Riq Roc, Jiggy Jai, Aminata, Zy’on, Mateo, Ras Jomo, Antonello, Paul, Ant Jr., Morgan, Sufana, Carma Dee, Yazmine (make-up), Cassie, Veronica and of course Dom, Dave, Lonnie, Tone and John.
Thanks to Allita for coming out as well and hanging out. I’m sure I missed someone, but please excuse me as the day has been a very long one so my recollection is fuzzy at this moment. God Bless.

DAY 135 GRAMMY CHASE: DY-NO-MITE

My man Alan put me on to this movie that many just aren’t learning much about as it’s an independently released movie by actor Michael Jai White. Black Dynamite will most likely become a slowly bubbling cult classic, I’m sure of it. It’s an incredible movie!! But in regards to the Grammy Chase, I think that we may very well see a Grammy nod for 2011 in the soundtrack category or something related. Above is a video by one of the arrangers/composers.

DAY 134 GRAMMY CHASE: DWYCK

Not Grammy related, but every now and then I HAVE to take it back and pay respects to the classics. In a perfect world, DWYCK would have earned a Grammy for Best Rap Collaboartion, or something like that. Maybe even, Best Opening Scratch by a DJ….Classic

DAY 133 GRAMMY CHASE: MOS DEFINITELY

The multi-talented Mighty Mos Def! I’m finding it rather difficult to understand how Black on Both Sides (1999) wasn’t recognized for its unique sound and blend as being Grammy worthy of even a small nod!!.Well, its not the first time we’ve seen it go down like that. Bottom line, DEF is DEFINITELY that dude. Since his solo debut, he has been nominated several times, but nothing more than a nomination, which is fine, because as I always say, not winning a gramophone doesn’t take away from ones contribution and impact.

Here’s a video I never knew existed..LOVED the song however, but never knew that there was a video for it. “Sex, Love and Money,” nominated for Best Urban/Alternative Performance (2005.) Be warned, the video is very graphic, peep the title.

DAY 132 GRAMMY CHASE: PUN. BIG PUN

The first Puerto Rican solo rapper to reach Platinum status, the late, great Big Pun. Not only was he recognized for his verbal wizardry and flow, but Pun was also very close to nabbing a Grammy, only to have it snatched from his grasp by Vol.2…Hard Knock Life (Best Rap Album) 1998. On his short run, Pun definitely left us with some jewels and hit songs as well, namely “Don’t Want to be a Player.”

DAY 131 GRAMMY CHASE: THE WIZ

In memory of the remarkable life and contributions of Lena Horne, today’s Grammy Chase acknowledges all of the actors, actresses and musicians that made the movie The Wiz an incredible delight for the silver screen. It’s been more than 30 years but the movie is STILL just as gripping, intense and inspirational. In doing a little digging as I have been for the past 130 other days, I discovered that The Wiz was granted a Grammy in 1978, and rightfully so. At the hands and talents of the renowned Quincy Jones and Robert (Bobby) Freedman, the movie was awarded Best Instrumental Arrangement. Below is a video that someone compiled of M. Jackson clips, bringing back great memories. Thanks whomever you are.
