DAY 109 GRAMMY CHASE: UNFORGETTABLE

Let me take it back to the days of high school, when I surely wasn’t paying attention to the Grammy’s and so Hip-Hopped out that I missed a truly “unforgettable” Grammy night for Natalie Cole in 1992.

Nat King Cole was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, while his daughter Natalie preserved the Cole legacy even further by smashing the Grammy’s in 1992 by taking home 7 gramophones in one evening. She took home 3 of the top 4 (Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year) as well as 4 other categories.

The racial suppression and abuse that Nat King Cole endured over his career really makes me a bit embarrassed how today’s artists just take things for granted, have it a lot easier and yet they contribute much less to the integrity of black music.

DAY 108 GRAMMY CHASE: THE OTHER JOE JACKSON

Now I’m mad, real mad..Joe Jackson.” – Kanye
Well this is a different Joe Jackson obviously. This was one of my favorite songs back in the day, but it still gives me the same good feeling. Joe Jackson was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male and Record of the Year in 1983. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any other evidence of musical hits since. Dope nevertheless. Im sure that no artist EVER intends to make a hit record without more successful follow-ups, but it happens all too often. God Bless the GMA project.

Thanks Joe.

DAY 105 GRAMMY CHASE: THE ELEMENTS

Definitely one of my favorite groups EVER! Earth, Wind and Fire was a staple in black homes in the mid to late 70′s and throughout, for I remember to this day the feeling that the music gave me and how enthralled I was with each and every albums music as well as the artwork.  Shusei Nagaoka is the artist behind many of their album cover masterpieces which appropriately matched the audio-masterpieces of Earth, Wind and Fire. I’ll get to Shusei Nagaoka (artist) at another time.

[Nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals - 1981]

Earth, Wind and Fire is one of those special groups that no only put out GREAT bodies of work, in fact some of the BEST bodies of work among their peers and competitors, but they’ve never seemed to actually have a problem getting recognized by the academy for their contributions. “Shining Star” from their  debut album snatched a Grammy in 1975 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and from that point on well up into 2005, they’ve received numerous awards as well as nominations.

Here is a bonus for you to play in the background while you work, clean and chill. (just audio, no video)

[Won Grammy 1978 for Best R&B Instrumental Performance]

DAY 104 GRAMMY CHASE: MYA OH MY!!

I’m not sure how I stumbled across blogging about Mya today, but nevertheless, here I am blogging about Mya. Honestly speaking, as I have shared in previous posts regarding artists albums that I don’t have in my collection, like the big dawgs: Kanye, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Jeezy etc, you’d be guessing correctly that I do not own a Mya album either. After selling multi-platinum albums, especially double-platinum right out the gate at age 18, I’m wondering what her “staying power” is like. She debuted in 1998, so 12 years later, is she no longer news or buzz-worthy? I really have no clue as to what her status or current relevance is, as I don’t follow R&B. But seeing as how I DO follow Hip-Hop, let me take you back to 1999 when Mya was all abuzz and featured on one of the “Worst” Rap songs EVER, but ironically snatched a Nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo/Group. Let me say this as well, ODB was the only good thing that happened to this song.

In closing, given this weird ramble that I’ve launched, Mya did nab 2 of her very own Grammy’s in 2001 for Best Video of the Year and Best Video from a Film. See video below for a reminder. Hard to NOT win an award for a video like this, cmon, who are we foolin!?

DAY 103 GRAMMY CHASE: CARMA DEE TV

Recent interview with Carma Dee for Carma Dee TV. We had a great time. When people are good at doing what they do, like having great hosting skills, they make the guests feel right at home and get the most from interview. I even learned something about myself while watching. Why do I smile before answering nearly every question? Can you tell that life is good!? It truly IS what you make it.

Check more of Carma Dee’s interviews here: More

DAY 102 GRAMMY CHASE: ME AGAINST THE WORLD

“Dear Mama” – from Me Against the World album.

Yup, one of the greatest hip-hop artists to ever step in the booth. Period!! 2Pac, Me Against the World (1995), nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1996 Grammy Awards. In his own words, Pac said that this album (Me Against the World) was most likely his best album and most favorite. 2Pac was also the only hip hop artist posthumously nominated for Best Hip Hop Performance for the song “Changes,” in 2010.

DAY 101 GRAMMY CHASE: BACK TO BASICS

Day 101 inspires me to share a little Hip-Hop 101. The basics: DJ – Emcee(s)
Peep! This simple art form has surpassed the early naysayers expectations from the ghetto bricks of the Bronx to the tune of 30+ years of evolution, numerous Grammy’s and millions upon millions of records sold. This is why I do what I do.

I love K.K. Rock and Rodney Cee (Double Trouble).

Note: This video is a composite of a more recent beat with a clip from the movie Wildstyle.

DAY 100 GRAMMY CHASE: AGAINST ALL ODDS

100th day of the Grammy Chase. There must be SOMETHING I can do to celebrate. One way to start I suppose is by honoring another one of my influences who inspired a generation, defined a culture and became an icon/symbol of excellence. This particular Bruce Lee scene, visually interprets the “Good Fight” that I continue in everyday, against all odds.
